He is always in search for the balance between the creative impulse and practicality.
SIMPLICITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
As a maker Reuben has a romantic view of crafts and craftsmanship, taking a stand against the mass produced and throwaway that is so prevalent in our times .He takes great care and pride in employing the use of traditional joinery, solid timber construction blended artfully with contemporary techniques.
"Make with care to create something of lasting quality".
TELL US YOUR STORY?
As a designer I am drawn to simplicity, refining details to find a harmony between the timber and its intended use.
Ten years ago I was working with a master carpenter who at the end of work one day handed me a book 'The Village Carpenter by Walter Rose'.
It tells of the importance of skill, the sense of community, and the attitudes to work and sustainability. It kick started my romance with timber and craftsmanship.
TELL US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS?
I think I am living my proudest moments right now,. I am working full time making commission pieces which is a never ending education in design, making and collaborating, whilst striving to create lasting and meaningful furniture.
WHAT CREATIVE WORK HAS YOU EXCITED RIGHT NOW?
I am excited to be part of a movement of designers/artist/makers offering an alternative and more sustainable way for consumers to engage. Materialism at its best, caring about where something is from, how it was made and the quality of the goods.
What designs are you working on right now?
I have just finished designing a record cabinet to be made from some beautiful Tasmanian Blackwood.
What advice do you have for emerging designers?
Keep it simple and authentic.
