TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGNS AND WORK STYLE?
I would like to think that I pay close attention to details and I love observing everything around me such as people, places, and objects. These observations help me when I am sketching my designs because I like to create a story behind each piece, and this transfers to my clients who wear my finished outfits. It becomes more than just a piece of garment.
When I design it is a process. I put all my ideas down and sketch on paper, these piles up and then during my designing time, I gather everything together to create something exciting to make.
HOW WAS THE CHICHELLE BRAND BORN?
I have always had an interest in fashion and design since I was 13 years old. I then decided to pursue my dreams and study BA in fashion design. I graduated in 2013 from Regents University in London. During my time at university, I began working on my first collection “Roots & Routes”. This was a fusion of Ugandan and Scandinavian traditional costumes with an additional element of streetwear. This collection allowed me to express my own cultural identity.
WHAT is one of your proudest moments as a designer?
Being recognised for my talent. After all the hard work, and hours of sketching and designing, it is the best feeling. A fulfilment. I am also proud to say that I have continued doing what I love and building my brand after graduating from university.
WHAT DESIGNS HAS YOU EXCITED RIGHT NOW?
I really love Givenchy’s latest collection ‘Bleached Canvas’, very feminine, sophisticated and playful shapes. I am also working on my next collection which I’m looking to showcase this year.
What advice do you have for emerging designers?
If you have a vision, go for it. We also tend to believe that designers only have to be creative but that’s not always the case. Learn about the business side of things, marketing, sales, branding etc. When starting out as an emerging designer, make sure you learn as much as possible about the industry and I would definitely recommend that you work for a fashion brand to get an insight of how the industry works.
